HILLSIDE TRAILS/ACCESSIBILITY

Accessible community for all!

Phase 1 of our HBCA lead trails project (2025) is complete!

In 2025, HBCA partnered with Trails Manitoba to create an accessible hard packed trail at Charlie Wall Park and purchase mobility mats for the beach. Our public beach and community park had large barriers to entry for anyone with mobility challenges. With a growing senior and year-round population, HBCA made critical upgrades to the park and beach trail infrastructure to ensure they are accessible to all.

Hillside Beach path - HBCA improved the grade of the existing beach access trail situated at the end of Lagoon Rd. Then added a 50-foot accessibility mat extending to the water’s edge. Next Spring it will be installed at the beginning of the season and volunteers will help keep it sand free for the entire Summer!

Year-round washroom - The RM Alexander has installed a new year-round accessible washroom at Charlie Wall Park. Touch up painting will be done in the Spring. This initiative, by the RM Alexander, is part of the vision to bring permanent infrastructure to the communities. In addition to this one, and the Traverse Bay Boat Launch washroom, they will be adding another one at Yellow Brick Road Boat Launch, and Auglen Park in Bird River this Fall. Next year, they will add one at St-Georges Boat Launch.

Charlie Wall Park
- HBCA developed a new 200 ft accessible hard top trail leading from the accessible parking area to the picnic shelter which overlooks the sports field. The new trail allows access to the children’s playground and the accessible year-round washroom for residents and visitors with enhanced mobility requirements. Next Spring volunteers will add an accessible landing under the shade sail.

HBCA's future Phase 2 of the project (2026++) involves development of new trails extending from the Charlie Wall Park trail into the surrounding forested area. These new trails will provide an additional 5 kilometers to our existing network of trails dedicated to non-motorized mixed use such as cross-country skiing, bicycling and hiking.

Adopted Trails

Picture
The current trails network at Hillside Beach created through the “Adopt-A-Trail” project are used year-round by residents and visitors hiking the area and are well compacted by this foot traffic. The Sunset trail signs can be found throughout the community at 19 volunteer-maintained trails.

Trail from Store to Park

The new trail from the store to park was created last Fall 2024 by the RM Alexander. This trail is for non-motorized vehicles only (walking, bikes, strollers) and the RM Alexander will put signs up soon.
